Oh please, Professor, why can't we go with you and see all the Crowned Heads of Europe?

My dearest friends,

I must beg your forgiveness, for I've been keeping secrets. For some time now, I've been plotting to convince my company to allow me to transfer to our London store. I've been terribly nervous, I admit. Either an acceptance or a rejection would imply its own set of problems, and, for a time, foolish creature that I am, I preferred to live in a world of idle fantasy, free of absolutes or concrete plans. Tonight I sent a letter of introduction, and received a reply a mere hour later.

I require: a work permit, a flat, and for someone to teach me to say, "What a dashing hat, you brilliant creature!" and, "Try a bit harder, love, buy me a drink first," in at least ten languages. If all goes as I'd like, I'll leave just after Tom and Erica ruin one another forever by getting married in July. (The work permit bit may actually pose a bit of a problem, but we'll see. Failing that, anyone over there care to get married?)

Eternally yours, you brilliant, wonderful things,
Jack

Does this mean that even in London we shall not be devoid of visiting you? And is even London is ready for your majestic appearance? Well, there is always Camden Town.

[identity profile] earlofgrey.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's true! My roommate found a map of Camden Market in my tea leaves last week. So, technically, I knew about this already. I was just waiting for reality to catch up.

fuck! that WAS a secret!
oh, i love you and hate you for leaving me.
july is too soon. i'm so happy for you.

congratulations, as i disjointedly sign off....

[identity profile] thereallinda.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 04:49 am (UTC)(link)

Bonus!

Fancy hats. Lots of dramatic shawls.

Expats R Us

If you like, I can send your contact info to a friend of mine who expatriated to the U.K. if you're interested in learning from her experiences.

When I get a second email back from the store, I should have a better idea of how problematic this part of it is going to be. (It seems the answer would either be "very" or "not at all".) Once I have a better idea of the shape of this monster, their contact information would be lovely.

This wouldn't happen to be that girl who used to go to FNI, would it?

Probably not.

I sing in your honor!

" O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee."

[identity profile] earlofgrey.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I removed my hat, and a tear came to my eye. (I somehow actually managed to develop a degree of emotional attachment to O Canada that doesn't exist for any other national anthem. Being a terrible person and not particularly bright, I can't even remember Ireland's. And I've never been to Canada!)

If I were to guess why, I'd say that O Canada is probably the best national anthem that you're very familiar with. The tune USA national anthem was lifted from a drinking song -- fine for raucous rabble rousing, not so good for patriotic inspiration.

[identity profile] earlofgrey.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some I know that are likely better, but O Canada is often used to great comedic effect in cartoons I enjoy, and the trope accidentally grew on me.

Who is this, by the way?

[identity profile] transversecity.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! I did not mean to make you cry! I would have sung the Israeli national anthem, instead, only my French is poor.

[identity profile] earlofgrey.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Worry not; I never cry real tears, only pure imported cider.

[identity profile] transversecity.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What's disturbing is that this is far from the first time I've wanted to lick your face.

I think London would be perfect for you. And really, you'd be perfect for London! Such a lovely match! I'm excited for you!

[identity profile] roadnotes.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
London! WooHOO!

[identity profile] swirl-girlx.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, yes. I did see it in your tea, didn't i!

when you move there, you should take the bulter with you. set him free to roam in his native lands. :D

[identity profile] earlofgrey.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
You're quite the fortune teller.

You kind, kind creature!

[identity profile] lilacfaeryboy.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But thats fabulous, you'll be over this side of the pond again! And London is a fantastic city!

[identity profile] earlofgrey.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I miss Ireland terribly. If everything works out I'll definitely return for a few days at least, and I'd love to see anyone who might have time to hang out.
