one of the things that i like about underground places is that our response to them remains fairly archetypal. they are ignored things, or, when thought of, places we'd rather not go. alligators in sewers and fecal matter are, essentially, the same thing. graves, basements, and abandoned mines are all either places mummy and daddy tell us are dangerous, or contain monsters that we're smart enough to avoid. children are often afraid of drains, of things reaching through, or of slipping under themselves. i was. being afraid of the things people don't want to acknowledge or deal with anymore isn't the most unwise of fears. in fact, i think kids are brilliant for noticing. all this is to say that at the crossroads where kaitlin lives, there are two storm drains waiting to swallow children. the street has worn away around them, leaving huge gaps, complete with metallic teeth on top. even i could easily slip through. in fact, i'm not entirely sure these hellmouths are a temptation i can resist. i like the underground places. it is possible that this makes me slightly dull; no one reads paradiso, after all. but i'm not sure that is the worst of things.

There was a little girl in our town out riding her bike and a huge thunderstorm came while she was on her way home.
The streets were flooded and she was knocked off her bike and washed down one of those types of gutters. She couldnt get out and noone saw it happen. She was missing, they found her about 4 days afterwards.
Many kids were scared of storms and gutters for awhile after that.
I was 12 at the time. The little one was 6 or 7 if I remember right.

Underground places are fascinating. I went caving for the first time recently, and I've fallen in love.

whenever i have the opportunity to be underground, i tend to imagine stairs leading down to a rounded-off cave and a woman standing in the center of that darkness, black on black on black.

underground places both frighten and draw me. i feel rather like a mouse with a taste for adventure, knowing that the cat is somewhere in the kitchen but unable to resist the draw of cheese.

Make sure you go in with a compass, chalk, water, food and other sensible supplies.

That's a pretty modern attitude to the underground, I think.

I've always loved the underground. I make a conscious effort to make wherever I happen to be dwelling as much like a dungeon as possible. Dark, warm, candle lit. The dark can be a beautiful thing. That's part of the reason people fear it so.

You are a great many things, Mister, but "dull" is most certainly not one of them.

I refuse to believe it. What you call tedious, I'd probably find endearing. *nods*

One of the awful things about Louisiana is there are no underground places here. A very few tunnels under a swamp but I am loathe to go in them. I can handle rock above my head but not water. Never water.

that's terrible! you have wonderful graveyards, though, so they are sort of like underground places brought up to your level.
