i realized tonight, as she walked me home, that i have no mythology for the moon. this is terribly odd. i'm used to being surrounded by it, to having everything i touch be a symbol for something else, to always have the stories at hand. everything i know about the moon is personal. sappho named her silver, yes, and the word itself is masculine, but these are very small things. she is someone i'd sneak out to see, rubies and candles in hand. she'll lead me home; although i have no system for it, my sense of direction is sometimes moon based. i can tell you about tides, about the way she pulls us, stabilizes us, keeps us constant while she shifts. but there are no explanatory fictions between us. our friendship is a strange one. i know i like her immensely, but i don't know who she is.

I am extremely fond of her, but I do not know her either. I think, perhaps, I'm not meant to know her closer than I already do. And I am perfectly okay with that.

*nods* i think maybe you're right. maybe she changes too much for stories, anyway.

all i really now of her is that she seems to always be there at the toughest times, comforting and mysterious, romantic in the most cosmopolitan sense. she might be peculiar in that she keeps to herself, but she always seems to know when you realy need her, and i have to respect that.

all that i can think to say about her is that she somehow connects me, though i don't know what with, precisely. something about her makes everything dirty seem not so. i don't know that i need to know her name, really. although i'd like to. i feel rather like an aprentice, only able to address her as 'mistress' or 'my lady.' or perhaps i am wooing her with foxglove and diamonds. either way, my silver lady has not told me her name. there is a tolerent, loving superiority about her that i adore. it makes me want to sneak into her bedroom and watch her glow.

Have you read The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon by Tom Spanbauer??

It's one of my favorite books of all time. People have mixed responses to it but check out this blurb about it and see what you think. http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=1-0060974974-3&partner_id=1829
