perhaps, in reality, the virgin mary was the greatest atheist the world has ever known. i like to think of her writing manifestos sprinkled with capital letters as if she were an enlightenment thinker, eloquently disproving the existence of a god without doubt through science and logic and mathematical proofs. and so god cursed her with motherhood, with birthing himself, so that she would be forced, not only to believe, but to love.

in the koran, she births alone under a tree, and she cries out from the pain. she wishes that she'd never been born. i cannot say i prefer the interpretation completely, but it is good to remember.
